To check growing rebellion in Latin America after the Cuban Revolution, at Punta del Este in 1961 John F. Kennedy initiated the Alliance for Progress--a program for free trade and development. Che Guevara, representing the Cuban government, condemned the plan as a new strategy of domination. The book echoes today's debate provoked by President Chavez's proposal for an alternative Latin American trade bloc.
